My hometown...

A chick linked this news story on a forum, and started a discussion about it...to find out if people thought it was funny, or offensive.

Back in my hometown, some people are outraged over this billboard for a local adult novelty shop...

I know it's small, but in case you can't read it, it says, "Stop vegetable abuse." Then, it lists the websites of the adult stores.

Personally, I think it's as tasteful as it's gonna get for an ad for an adult sex shop. I mean...I can think of a helluva lot more offensive images they could choose to sell their products.

It's a CUCUMBER for crying out loud!!

Young kids won't even get it. You can just lie to them, and tell them that the cucumber is sad, because kids don't eat their vegetables anymore. You skirt around the masturbation conversation, the kids are guilted into eating their greens! It's a win/win!

As for teenagers...well, they already know about masturbation whether you'd like to admit it, or not!! I mean, maybe our daughters aren't using cucumbers...but, at least you'll know what's up, if all of a sudden, the cucumbers in the house go missing!

When I was searching for an image for this post, I found that it actually started as a late night television commercial. Mind you, I wouldn't know anything about that...because I don't have television right now!! And I doubt they air it on the one channel we get...because it's that Jesus channel!! And if they DO air it on the Jesus channel...well, then I'll see you in church this Sunday!! Can I get an AMEN?

Check it...

So, what do you think? Tacky? Tasteful? Offensive? Or, funny as hell?!?

I wanna join the gang meeting under the phallic veggie!

I wish my town was cool enough for a risque vegetable sign. Poo.

I am not kidding you, I had NO idea what the ad was about until I realized what the stores were (and even then, I had to be told they sold sex toys since I had never heard of them). If I didn't know what it was (and I am a girl who loves to love herself!) then I guarentee you no kid is going to know what it is... Just silly to get so upset about. I think it's adorable!

I really did think it was funny (well, you know I didn't get it at first)...and I DO think it is the 'best' you could do for this type of thing...and you gave a really good explanation of explaining it to my 10YO...EAT MORE VEGGIES! ;)

Also, just to show (don't tell anyone...shhhh) but, yesterday I walked away from my computer with that billboard ad up and my 4YO saw it...she said, "Look mommy, a pickle!" She didn't even realize it was a fresh cucumber....anyhow, I know I am a bit overprotective of my girls, but I did laugh really hard when I realized what it was about.

Also, why do I remember seeing something about vegi-mast on 1,000 ways to Die (Except, I think it was a different veggie)...I definitely will not be abusing veggies! ;)

So funny!! Not sure why everyone was in an uproar over it? I thought it was cute and very tasteful. :)

Oh my god, I wish they would put something like that up in Atl. Closest thing we have that gets me laughing is a billboard that says "Who's yo Daddy" for DNA testing. And in Atl. it is a pretty wealthy business.

Is that the Cucumber from Veggie Tales. I smell a new video

Thats hilarious! Things like that don't bother me, offend me or whatever.

Ok the only problem I have is that they could have used some more vegetables...like say squash, zucchini.

Freaking hysterical!! I love it and you are right....kids will not get it at all! People need to loosen up a little and not let stuff like this sign bother them.

To Momof3inVA...you did see a veggie related show on "1000 ways to Die". It was about a woman who liked to garden, especially caring for her cucumbers. Then she sees a man riding a bike with tight biking shorts on, notices that he is "very large", says hi and gets all hot for him, goes back to tending her garden, decides to practice with a cucumber when she remembers his package, steps on a shovel (or maybe it was a rake), shovel hits her in the face, the cucumber gets jammed in her throat and she dies.

I've only watched that show twice and both times it had a story on sexual behavior that led to death. Funny, yet really not.

robin - hallelujah!

tina - lancaster! in the ghetto!

SIF & Samantha - truthfully, i didn't know what it was about at first, either. i thought it was a pickle, too!

jes - as tasteful as a sex ad can get!!

scott - IT DOES LOOK LIKE THE VEGGIE TALES DUDE!!

tracy - or an eggplant, i mean...if you're into that sort of thing!

wendy & samantha - off to add that to netflix!! what a way to frickin' die, man! wonder if they put that in her obit?!?

It doesn't really bother me. Like you said most kids won't get it and well everyone else that does should just keep it to themselves. There is no reason to get all up tight about it.

I gave you a blog award today on my page! Not because of your approval of an adult store ad...ha! ;o) Just because I enjoy your blog!

Cute, not super funny. Not at all upsetting. Whateva. Many other things in my life to worry over than a silly little ad....

I think it's funny and I think you're right - I'd rather have THAT ad than a picture of a mostly naked, barely legal girl.

Elizabeth said...

Okay, I find that commercial funny. Really funny. But I don't think I'd want my kids to see it, especially those who are too young to understand it and too old not to question it!

justacomment said...

OMG that is hysterical!!! Gotta wipe my eyes and read some more!

i'd go to that store BECAUSE of the billboard.

theagnosticswife said...

Haha I happen to think it's funny! I mean you don't expect it to be an adult toy commercial and that's what makes it funny too.

Kaira said...

Okay, that is funny!

Sarah Q said...

ah ha ha ha! I LOVE IT. That has to be one of the best commercials I've ever seen!

And really, if you can air so many obvious commercials about erectile dysfunction... you can air that. :)
